What is Lens Protocol?
Lens Protocol is a permissionless, composable, & decentralized social graph. What does this mean?
It basically means that anyone is allowed to develop an app that sits on top of the Lens Protocol graph.
Each and every app is then able to "plug into" the social graph allowing for better interoperability and communication for people linked to Lens Protocol.
How is Lens Protocol different from existing social media?
Right now, social media platforms are silod, and we're dependent on the company to keep their centralized database running and operate in a fair and equal manner.
This doesn't always happen. There have been a lot of questionable changes at Twitter since Elon Musk took the reigns. Changes that negatively affect people on the platform by limiting the reach they have to their audience or simply stripping them of their audience outright.
If you then move to another platform, you have to start from step 1 again.
It's an inefficient method that leads to monopolies and dependency.
Lens Protocol, on the other hand, is user owned.
When a user owns their data they're able to rest easy as they can't really lose access to their community or content.
They're able to "plug into" any application built on Lens Protocol and bring all of their existing assets over to that new app.
It creates a nice network effect where each and every application built upon Lens Protocol then contributes to the whole and continues growth.
Does Lens Protocol have a token?
Lens Protocol has three different kinds of token. All three are ERC721-compliant and fully composable.
The tokens break down as...
- LensHub - This is an upgradeable contract and the core entry point for most interactions on Lens Protocol.
- FollowNFT - Upon a profile's first follow, a FollowNFT contract is deployed. This is unique to the profile and the the ERC721 NFT contract represents follower positions.
- CollectNFT - Finally, on a publications first collect Lens deploys a CollectNFT token. it's unique to the core contract and represents collected publications.
