Intel Launches New Mining Chip Focusing on Energy Efficiency

Quick take:

  • Intel released their new mining chipset called the Blocksale ASIC.
  • The chip will be released and shipped by the third quarter of 2022.

According to a press release given to Bitcoin Magazine, Intel released specifics for their new bitcoin mining chip called the Intel Blockscale ASIC.

It envisions improving the energy efficiency of Proof-of-Work (PoW) mining through the company's decades of research and development in related fields.

The Intel Blockscale ASIC will play a major role in helping bitcoin mining companies achieve both sustainability and hash rate scaling objectives in the years ahead,” said Jose Rios, general manager of Blockchain and Business Solutions at Intel.

An improved system for efficient mining

According to Intel, each chip will have a hashrate of up to 580 gigahash per second (GH/s) with 26 joules/terahash (J/TH) power efficiency.

"With Intel's decades of research and development in cryptography, hashing algorithms, and ultra-low voltage circuits, blockchain applications can increase their computational capacity without sacrificing sustainability," said Balaji Kanigicherla, vice president and general manager of Intel's blockchain unit.

Intel also plans to deploy a baseline hardware and software design stack in its deliveries to assist customers in getting their systems up and running quickly.

Argo Blockchain, Block, Inc., Hive Blockchain, and GRIID Infrastructure are some of the first mining companies to get Intel's next processor, which will be available in Q3 2022.

Intel said that beginning in 2023, it will partner with and supply prospective consumers who share its defined objectives.

The higher power consumption of energy-intense mining has consistently raised concerns. Better chips and types of equipment that can provide better output with less power consumption.
